Starting back to school

It's July 31st, and we're halfway through our first official week of school. I've already been asked multiple times why we're starting back to school so early. I mean, we home school so why give up our summer?  I actually have a few reasons, and I shall list them here. =)

1. It's too hot to do anything besides go to the pool, and kids get tired of the pool if you go everyday. And all of the indoor things that are so fun and cool cost money. Not much is cheap when it involves 4 people. So why waste the time when they can work? ;)

2. We did not accomplish as much as I feel like we should have last year so we're starting early to play catch up. Yeah, I said it. I don't even feel that guilty anymore. It was one of those years that kept me focused on other things and school took a backseat when other important things came up.

3. Things will ALWAYS come up throughout the year. People will get sick. Extra work gets piled on at the last second. If we start early, we have the time to handle whatever crisis is barreling down the tracks towards us. Because let's be honest folks, isn't there always a crisis on the horizon?

4. You know those vacations that everyone squeezes in between the beginning of June and the beginning of August? Yeah, we don't vacation during those months. We'll travel in September. And maybe December or February. When everyone else is in school, that's when we get to go to Great Wolf  Lodge with no lines or Disney World with shorter lines. If math in July is what it takes to NOT wait 30 minutes to go down a giant water slide, I'll take the math.

5. No matter when we start school or how much we have (or haven't) done, my brain is pretty much checked out of school by the middle of May. I just need to accept that fact and plan around it. Ergo, we start school at the end of July.

Now don't feel too bad for my kids. We still went to the water park  yesterday and had friends over all day. We'll still do lots of things in the afternoons with friends. In fact, next week I'm hoping to go ice skating with some friends. We'll simply spend our mornings on math, writing, grammar, and the fall of Rome before going out in the afternoon.

Basically, the diligence to do what we need to do allows us the freedom to do what we want to do.  I hope that makes sense.  So there you go. Now you know why we started school in July!
