Community or Not Community?

So what I'm going to say is probably going to make some of my friends feel uncomfortable, and I really am sorry for that. It's not my intention at all. You know I keep coming back to the church discussion.  A few years ago I was really struggling with my feelings on church in general, and I'm taking the next step in that journey here.  Before you go any further, just know that I'm basing this solely on my own experience and personal opinion. Okay? So here it goes. I'm kind of over the new, super cool, relevant churches that are popping up everywhere.  Although a lot of passionate Christ-loving people are a part of this movement, I think it's slated to be another fad that fades in another 10 years when the next generation comes up and tells us what we've all done wrong.  Ironically, the biggest weakness I've seen is what is touted as their strength. COMMUNITY   ***BUZZ***  This seems to be the top churchy buzzword going around right now.  Everyo...

Law of motion

Newton's First Law of Motion: An object in motion stays in motion with the same speed and in the same direction unless acted upon by an unbalanced force .  I only shared the part of the definition applicable to me because we've recently hit an unbalanced force that is finally slowing us down. For the nearly 3 years we lived in Charleston, we lived life at a breakneck speed. Between traveling, work, and school, we had almost no spare time. And we loved it most of the time.  Now that we've moved, we are being forced to slow down. I've fought the slow down, but small-town country life is stronger than me. =) I admit defeat. I've already started putting off trips to town because it's just. so. far.  It's not really, but it's far enough that it takes up a decent amount of time.  And just today that extra time has allowed me to drop some of the mommy guilt I've been piling on myself.  As you know, I have a weakness at mealtimes for running...

Continuing our country experiment

Okay, it's just over a week into our new home. We're still adjusting, but here are some things that stand out so far. Love: Sleeping with the windows open. We haven't had the AC on since we moved, and it's been nice. =) Dislike. The humidity ruined my salt shaker. No AC and open windows means we had more humidity inside. My salt stopped pouring and the metal top started to rust. Like: We hear nature sounds all the time instead of traffic. Birds, frogs, crickets, coyotes...it's nice.  Dislike: We're starting to miss our friends. If we want to see anybody, we have to venture out for a few hours. Sometimes it was nice to walk outside and chat with a neighbor. Neutral: No trash pick-up. So far this doesn't bother me, but I expect it to irritate me at some point. Probably on a day when it's cold and rainy or when I need to take the trash to the dump when it's closed. THEN I won't like it so much. Dislike for TODAY only: The nearest Starbuc...

Adjusting back to country life

Somehow October began two days ago, and I missed it. Last week we packed up our apartment. Over the weekend we moved back to my childhood home in the country.  Sunday my grandfather passed away, and Monday we had the funeral. Monday I also took my husband to the airport since he started his new job this week. Tuesday the government kind of shut down so the timing of Mr. Inc's new job was perfect for us at least. Tuesday and Wednesday involved unpacking, getting settled, and adjusting to a life in the country. Overall, the kids love it here. They get to go outside whenever they want. We're tucked away in the woods far from the road (which is a backroad anyway) so they've got more freedom than they've ever had. I think I've finally convinced Miss Firecracker that she's not hearing bobcats whenever she goes outside. Today we went to the library so Mr. Logical could do some research for two papers he has due on Friday. Yes, I'm making him look up information i...
