Continuing our country experiment
Okay, it's just over a week into our new home. We're still adjusting, but here are some things that stand out so far.
Love: Sleeping with the windows open. We haven't had the AC on since we moved, and it's been nice. =)
Dislike. The humidity ruined my salt shaker. No AC and open windows means we had more humidity inside. My salt stopped pouring and the metal top started to rust.
Like: We hear nature sounds all the time instead of traffic. Birds, frogs, crickets, coyotes...it's nice.
Dislike: We're starting to miss our friends. If we want to see anybody, we have to venture out for a few hours. Sometimes it was nice to walk outside and chat with a neighbor.
Neutral: No trash pick-up. So far this doesn't bother me, but I expect it to irritate me at some point. Probably on a day when it's cold and rainy or when I need to take the trash to the dump when it's closed. THEN I won't like it so much.
Dislike for TODAY only: The nearest Starbucks is almost an hour away. I'm not a Starbucks drinker usually. It's too expensive for me personally. BUT every couple of months I really WANT a Starbucks mocha latte or pumpkin spice latte and it's not doable anymore.
Love: The kids get to go outside and play whenever they want. They can be as loud as they want and no one will hear them. They've hardly watched TV since we moved. Even when they're not outside, they're reading books instead or playing games. I still haven't figured out what the change is, but I'm not complaining.
Like...kind of: The kitchen is cleaner. Hear me out on this. The dishwasher is kind of loud (I know, First World Problems) and it's disruptive if we're trying to do anything else. So I've been washing everything by hand. I HATE HATE HATE washing dishes, but the dishwasher enables me. If I know I can eventually put the dishes in the dishwasher, I don't mind if they pile up a little bit. However, if I know I have to be the one to wash them, I do it immediately because who wants to wash yucky dishes? Not me.
HATE: No internet. I miss my internet. I don't like have to go to my parents' house if I need an actual computer. This has actually happened a couple of times and it's annoying. Again, First World Problem. Whatever.
As for the kids, they're split on the decision. They miss apartment living, but they like the benefits of living in the country. They love having stairs. =) They miss the pool. They like the fact that we're slowing down and not so busy. We'll see what they think of slowing down after a few more weeks.
