The perils of upgrading.

For my birthday, Mr. Inc decided to catch us up with the rest of the world and bestow upon me the power of the SMARTPHONE.  I know, I know. We are very behind the times, but as of Friday, we are catching back up with the tech-aholic world we live in.  Mr. Inc has been pushing for smartphones for quite awhile, and I was the one resisting the change. I had two reasons. One, I didn't want our phone bill to go up. I'm practical that way. Two, I recognize my weakness for social media, and I wasn't sure I would handle 24/7 access very well.  But the day had come. We went to the store and proceeded to buy two Galaxy s3s.

Once the process was over, we walked out of the store with two shiny, new phones and substantially less money than we had when we walked in. These things ALWAYS cost more than you think. And what did we have? To exorbitant pieces of technology that I had absolutely no idea how to use. I missed my sliding grandfather of a phone. I knew how to text with it. Now my texts were boxes of incoherent letters. Auto correct doesn't work the same way as it does on an itouch. I was used to Apple products, and now I was learning a new system. A system that's not that different from Apple, but different enough to render me completely helpless with a piece of technology that could run a small country.

So for the past 3 1/2 days, Mr. Inc has been glued to his new device every spare second playing games or trying to figure something out. I've been googling all kinds of questions like "How do I take a screenshot?" or "What do the different colored blinking lights mean?" or "Where is that clipboard that is apparently  holding all kinds of info that I've somehow saved?"  I should have googled "How do I silence my Galaxy?" because went to see a movie, and I realized I had no idea how to make all of the noises stop.

And so. many. noises!  Every time I get a text, there's a noise AND a blinking light. Every email, every facebook notification. They all get a noise. EXCEPT when I get an actual phone call. That was the one thing that had the volume turned down completely.

I can see the benefits. I really can. I don't have to waste time checking my email. My phone will tell me when I get one. I won't miss texts because this contraption will blink at me until I look to see what I've missed. On the other hand, I can understand why my friend used to "forget" to charge her phone on a regular basis. There's something to be said for being unavailable sometimes.

I'm sure I'll get the hang of my new personal assistant soon enough, and I'll probably even love it. Right now, I miss my old phone. It was simple. We understood each other. It fit in my hand. It fit in my pocket.  *sigh*  I'll stop now. I officially sound OLD.
