No trip is simple when kids are involved.
This is how today went down.
This morning BBE slept in until 8:45 which he NEVER does. He said he didn't feel great, but he wasn't running a fever so I made the call to go ahead with our planned birthday zoo trip. I got the kids, snacks, and drinks ready, and then made the decision to dose the kids with Benadryl. They all have allergies. BBE has never actually had Benadryl before so I gave him the smallest amount as a test run. We piled into the car. Yes, CAR. The car uses half as much gas and has air conditioning. Since my van's AC has gone on an extended vacation and we were going on a 1.5 hr drive to Columbia, I opted for the car.
The Benadryl kicked in about 40 minutes later. How do I know this? Well, Mr. L suddenly got very sleepy at the exact same time that BBE went all psycho toddler on me. He started hitting himself, kicking my chair, and in true BBE form, tried to take his clothes off. The carseat prevented a full strip down, but he did manage to get his socks and shoes off. I realized this little tidbit when a sock flew by my head. On I26. At 70mph. Fifteen minutes later, BBE managed to get himself halfway out of his seat buckles resulting in a quick stop and a "come to Jesus" moment on the side of the road. Things were much better in the car from this point on. ;) Oh, except for when BBE decided to lick the side of his seat. Yes, LICK, then freaked out because his face kept touching the wet spot on the seat. Seriously. Then when I asked him what was wrong, he licked his seat again.
11:30am we make it to the mall where we're meeting my family for lunch for going to the zoo. Somehow in all of the running around I did to get ready to leave this morning, I never actually noticed what shoes Miss Firecracker was wearing. When she walked in front of me in the mall, I finally realized she was wearing cute capris and her favorite pair of boots. HOW did I miss that??? There she is, very happy with her boots.
When we left the mall to go to the zoo, I was talking to the kids about something completely forgettable when..."IT'S THE GOOGLE CAR WE HAVE TO FOLLOW IT I'M SO EXCITED IT'S THE GOOGLE CAR!!!" Yes, I completely embarrassed and freaked out (those are his words) my son, changed lanes and followed the google car. I even took it's picture. =)
Yay for unexpected bucket list items!
And...then we went to the zoo. We went to see the bears first. Mr. L was walking ahead and said, "The bears are fighting! Or...playing? What are they doing mom?" *sigh* Oh yes. It's that time of year. Love is in the air, the bears were completely smitten with each other. Actually, he was smitten with her. She seemed to want to be left alone.

The rest of our zoo trip was fun and blissfully uneventful. We left by 5pm, kid #1 and #3 slept most of the way home, and met up with group of friends from our church small group at Ye Old Fashioned Ice Cream. We came home, sent the kids to bed, finished the last episode of season 1 of Walking Dead, and it's finally bedtime. Goodnight.
